 Moving forward with Uninor

Telenor Group recently secured spectrum to offer mobile telecommunication services in six telecom circles in India. These circles are home to more than 600 million people. This is India’s future growth engine.

Telenor Group now has the potential to reach every second person in India, after securing its license to operate in the country’s six telecom circles. These circles are among the most populous regions in India that also have the lowest mobile penetration; estimated at around 40% at the end of 2012. This represents a strong platform for future growth.

“The ten months of uncertainty after the license cancellation have tested the organization’s ability to keep focus, growth and talent intact. Emerging successful in that test means that a much stronger, confident and competitive team has now won back its right to continue. We have brought competition and affordability to the Indian telecom sector, and I promise that we will continue to do that in the future as well,” says Uninor’s Managing Director Sigve Brekke.

“We have secured our operations in areas where Uninor has really established itself as a strong challenger. We have taken market positions here that give us a solid platform for further growth. With the uncertainties connected to spectrum and licenses out of the way, we are now moving forward”, says Jon Fredrik Baksaas, President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Telenor Group.

”India remains a country of tremendous potential. By securing these core circles, we are well positioned to continue to win every day in the world’s most fiercely competitive mobile market,” he adds.

Engines of growth at the heart of Telenor’s Indian footprint
In India, Telenor Group’s operations will cover the states of Uttar Pradesh, Uttarkhand, Bihar, Jharkhand, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Goa and Gujarat. This footprint includes a number of small and mid-sized cities.

95 of these cities have, over the past decade, grown by 37% on average, while five of them have seen triple-digit growth in the same period. 26 cities in these six circles have more than one million inhabitants and 50 cities have a population of over 500,000.

Telenor Group aims to boost connectivity

Accelerating the overall growth of these regions requires an enabling regulatory environment and stability in order to incentivize entrepreneurs and attract investors.

“Healthy competition in the telecom sector can help realize the promise of these vast and populous regions. With fresh spectrum secured, Telenor Group is now ramping up networks and distribution, in order to boost connectivity and contribute to the development of India,” says Jon Fredrik Baksaas.

No spectrum in Mumbai, Kolkata and West Bengal
Telenor did not secure spectrum in Mumbai, Kolkata and West Bengal. In these circles operations will continue until 18 January, the date till which licenses for these circles are valid. No other decision has been taken regarding operations in these circles yet.
